25 years in sales. I still sell every day - closing $28K–$80K packages for one of the world's most exclusive masterminds. My buyers are high-level people who typically decide on the call.
The first job I had where I actually sold something was in a liquor store in Melbourne. My first part-time job, right as high school ended and I turned 18. People walked in and I asked them what they needed, what they wanted, what they liked, what the occasion was and how I could help. Then I'd recommend something that honestly fit their criteria and preferences.
They left happier than when they walked in. They came back. Nothing about the interactions felt like "selling". They were just open, honest and well-intended conversations where I helped them the best way I could.
Be human. Ask, clarify and challenge as needed. Understand genuinely. Suggest and present honestly. Respect that the final decision is theirs. These are things I learned to do there - and that instinct has done the heavy lifting in my selling career ever since.
They have all the answers. Your job is to ask the right questions.
That sentence was the seed of everything that I now teach - the Socratic method. Not a script nor a pitch. Not to hammer them with information, facts and figures. Simply an understanding that the prospect is the expert on their own life, and the seller's job is to help them realize what they now must do.
How do we unlock that realization, the needed clarity and then action? Via questions. Socratic style. The belief that they have all the answers - and our job is to ask them the right questions, the right way and at the right time. When we do this well, they "sell themselves" (over us "selling to them"). Such a clean and dignified way - for all parties - to interact.
Twenty-five years later, that one sentence still governs every call I take.
The next period of my life was all about creativity, building and living experiences.
I sold gym memberships and content to TV networks. I started multiple businesses - some successful, some not. I contracted my services and consulted. I travelled, learned Spanish and moved to Latin America in this period too.
Through all of this, I kept selling. Products, services, experiences, in English and in Spanish, it didn't matter. Selling underpinned all those roles.
Over the last 5 years my selling focus has been with this elite mastermind. Remote selling mainly on zoom. 1-2 trips per year to major events in the US as part of the program. Selling to, rubbing shoulders with and learning from the elite of the business world. Days spent closing $28K to $80K offerings to founders, CEOs, and operators who have a low tolerance for fools and silly sales tactics.
These are among the most sophisticated buyers in the world - people who've heard every pitch and see through all of them. You can't push them. But you can work with them and create a situation where they want and choose you. That's the whole skill, and it's the part no script has ever solved.
Different industries, products, price points, languages, continents. Local to global markets, corporate roles to my own businesses, low ticket to $300K deals, in person to video calls. The surface kept changing.
What changes: the problem being solved, the product, the industry, the price point, who I'm selling to, the medium and the language.
What doesn't change: they have all the answers when we ask them the right questions (the right way and at the right time).
Everything else is mechanics. For this reason I can help a wide range of students working vastly different offers, price points and industries, and from my end I don't miss a beat.
I live in a beautiful part of tropical Latin America with my family. We spend 9 months per year here and the other 3 months in my native Australia.
We live in our dream home - and the life around it. My work is mobile, meaning it's easy to take on the road when we travel.
My work days? 2-3 hours sales calls. 2-3 hours on True Sales Pro and coaching work with my students. 1-2 hours exercise, and the rest is either family time or doing what I please.
I've intentionally crafted this life - to do what I want, when I want, with whom I want and where I want. To build something that lasts, too.
